Editor American Nut Journal:

Mr. Fred W. Heyne, P. O. Box 632, Douglas, Ariz., has reported some remarkable results of grafting nut tree scions on stock of a different species from the scion. This spring he grafted chestnut scions on white oak, Quercus alba, and black jack oak, Quercus Emoryi, and at the present writing has half a' dozen scions growing vigorously. He also reports grafting Thomas and Stabler black walnuts. Beaver hickory, Pleas hickory. Marquardt, Niblack and Butterick pecans and Lancaster heartnut on the native walnut of his section which is doubtless Juglans rupestris or a similar species. He reports all these growing well excepting the Beaver which grew two or three inches and then died.

Report of grafting one species of nut trees on stock of another species has come to our notice several times, but so far I am not aware that it has proven permanently successful. The work of Mr. Heyne will be watched with interest.
