You may have noticed something different in the October issue of Women’s Running Magazine: For the first time in the history of fitness and health magazines in the United States, the cover star wears a hijab.

Cover star Rahaf Khatib, 32, is a six-time marathoner who has competed in two triathlons and countless half-marathons as a hijabi. She is also the mother of three children.

Rahaf lives in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and started running in 2012 when she got bored with her gym classes. She signed up for a 10K in pursuit of an even bigger challenge.

Since that first race, she has answered many questions about her dress, but the most important is: “Aren’t you hot?” For the record, as she said Running For Women, “If it’s hot outside, you’re going to be hot anyway!”

Otherwise, she says, the running community has been welcoming – one of the reasons they are so excited to have other Muslim women run and so proud to be featured on a magazine cover. “This is something that I can show my children in the future, my community and especially my parents,” she said. Women’s running. “It means my sweat, tears, and training are worth it.”
